Sociotherapy, profession and professional code
General Methods of Approach of Sociotherapy
Before we go into this, we state that the basics of Sociotherapy imply that assistance is always reciprocal action which takes place in the here and now.
- Sociotherapy operates through a holistic vision of mankind. That is to say that the human being is seen as a somatic, psychic, social and spiritual unity, which is unique because of his own history of growth.
- The human being is seen as an autonomously functioning creature, and, simultaneously, as a socially dependent creature.
- All people are equal and should have the same rights and should be aware of this or be made aware.
- Human development occurs, by definition, through contact with others.
- People form all sorts of social contacts with each other.
- A human being needs other people to be able to realize his wishes and needs. The environment is therefore important for the development of human abilities. There is mutual influencing and mutual dependence.
- Malfunctioning social systems can form a serious obstacle to the development and well-being of a person.
- Problems (disorders) present themselves (eventually) as a disturbance in the person's ability to function, through which independent functioning can be restricted.
- The clinical living environment must be conceived as a recovery and/or development-improving environment and is as such an important therapeutic instrument.
- The clinical living environment must fulfill the conditions through which the client is stimulated to teach to and learn from others what is necessary for his own development (social learning in the present-day situation).
- The clinical environment contributes towards the learning of (psycho social) skills that are not only of use in the clinical system but for the future as well
- The creation of these conditions is a central concern for the Sociotherapy.
