Professional code for sociotherapists

Introduction

The Society for the Furtherance of Sociotherapy (VBS), founded in 1986, has as its aim the furtherance of the quality of the theories and the practice of Sociotherapy as a specific form of assistance within the Mental Health Care and Social Pedagogic Assistance.
The definition of Sociotherapy employed by the VBS is as follows:

Sociotherapy is the methodical management of the living environment of a group of clients, directed at the treatment goals of this group -conceived as a method of achieving the treatment goals of the individual client- within a functional unit of usually intramural treatment institutions.

The governing body of the Society accorded the Professional Code for the Furtherance of Sociotherapy in September 1992.
In the professional code, the professional responsibility of the sociotherapist is described and to which 'ethical' ground rules the sociotherapist must adhere.

It is assumed in the professional code that the sociotherapist is a member of a team of sociotherapists and member of a treatment team. A treatments team of a multi disciplinary make-up.

In the professional code the use of the 'male form' has been chosen, but it is also valid for the 'female form'. The description client can also be read, if so desired, as patient, inhabitant, customer or group member.

The governing body of the Society for the Furtherance of Sociotherapy will, if necessary and desirable, take care to install an Ethical Committee. The aim of this Committee is to deal with the questions of sociotherapists, clients and others, concerning the professional code and to advise and/or negotiate on these matters.
